Update on My Mom

December 8th, 2010

For those of you who don’t know, My mom had surgery on November 30th for an incisional hernia caused from her last surgery she had the end of August. They couldn’t do this surgery laporscopically so it meant another “open” surgery for my mom. The main incision is about two inches long and then she has twelve microscopic incisions in the shape of a clock around her stomach where they tacked a mesh in to hold everything together where the doctor did the repair.

When they got in to fix the hernia they found that not only was there a hernia, but her stomach muscles had started pulling apart. Apparently they generally would not repair this, but since they were already in there for the hernia, they used the same mesh they were placing to pull those muscles back together. Needless to say, it was quite a major surgery and she was in the hospital for two days before coming home. I think an extra day in there may have been beneficial, but anymore they kick you out as fast as they can.

So we are now one week out from surgery and overall she is doing well. However, this is a major recovery so she is moving slow and is still in quite a lot of pain.  Bending hurts and she is unable to dress herself still because she can’t bend over to pull pants or anything on. So I’ve been helping get her dressed and those sorts of things. Monday we got her out of the house for a couple hours to get her moving and help with the “cabin fever” she was beginning to feel. (I’m not sure she could be you Momma Bug, snowed in for the winter 🙂 ). We ran a few errands and late lunch out, then came home and both took naps.

She has gotten some small blood blisters caused from the steri strips they have over the tiny incisions and today her main incision started oozing, but the nurse at the doctor’s office assured us it was okay, and said she would talk to the doctor in the morning as he was in surgery all day Tuesday. She had the same problem with the last surgery and we ended up taking her to the ER because she ended up with an infection. I’m praying that this doesn’t lead to another infection like last time.

Right now we are making sure she takes it easy and hoping for a full recovery. We are trying to figure out what Christmas holds for us. We had planned to go to the L.A. area to visit my brother and sister-in-love as they will be there visiting Elika’s grandparents, but at the moment we are not so sure that mom will be up to traveling. So we have arranged alternate plans for Danny and Elika to drive up here for a few days when they are done visiting with E’s family. We shall see in another week how mom is doing. Mom and I would really love to get away for a little bit and get a break from it all here.

For now I think that is the update on mom. I have a doctor’s appointment this afternoon with my pain specialist and will see what he thinks about my MRA results. It will be interesting to hear one more opinion on the findings. Please continue to pray that my mom heals properly this time and she can begin feeling well with full strength and start a new chapter in her life. She has been fighting for close to two years now with these issues and is so ready to feel good and move on. Thank you for the love and support many of you have showed. It means so much to us.

  1. Well I for one, would much rather be hauling water from outside in the snow and dealing with frozen pipes, and no hot water. You even make it seem FUN!
I’m sorry you two are running the gauntlet still/again.
    I’m praying for you tonight.

    Love,
    ‘Lene
